Since the beginning of the second-wave feminist movement in the 1960s, strident complaints have been made regarding men’s sexual objectification of women. The foundation of this complaint was, and is, that when men objectify women sexually they see and treat them as sex objects. This line of thinking suggests that reducing women to sexual objects results in their dehumanization, which not only creates but also perpetuates men’s abusive and harassing behavior toward women. Women have been demanding that men view them in a more comprehensive, respectful, and humanized manner. Sadly, despite the call to action by feminists and the recent #MeToo Movement for the end of sexual harassment and sexual abuse, the response from many men has been nothing short of abysmal.

Wild Sex in the Middle Ages

In the popular imagination, the history of sex is a straightforward one. For centuries, the people of the Christian West lived in a state of sexual repression, straitjacketed by an overwhelming fear of sin, combined with a complete lack of knowledge about their own bodies. Those who fell short of the high moral standards that church, state and society demanded of them faced ostracism and punishment. Then in the mid-20th century things changed forever when, in Philip Larkin’s oft-quoted words, ‘Sexual intercourse began in 1963 … between the end of the Chatterley ban and the Beatles’ first LP.’

In reality, the history of human sexuality is far more interesting and wild. Many prevailing presumptions about the sex lives of our medieval ancestors are rooted in the erroneous belief that they lived in an unsophisticated age of religious fanaticism and medical ignorance. While Christian ideals indeed influenced medieval attitudes to sex, they were rather more complex than contemporary prejudices suggest. Christian beliefs interacted with medieval medical theories to help shape some surprising and sophisticated ideas about sex, and a wide variety of different sexual practices, long before the sexual revolution.

Here are the types of sex I’ve discovered in my 24 years.

  • The first time

Nervous, sweaty hands, not sure where to look or where to hold. The first time is always special. Not only the “first” first time, but also the first time with someone new. Madonna really was right when she sang “Like A Virgin”. It can make or break a relationship. Let’s be honest.
Bonus fact: And no, a one-night-stand doesn’t count as a “first time”. It lacks the build-up and anticipation.

  • The fast one

You have to be somewhere in 10 minutes, but you simply can’t stop yourself. The excitement is taking over and the ticking clock is turning you on. Nothing like a quickie to brighten up your day. And cheeks. Don’t worry you red face will be back to normal soon…
